Texas is using the computer-formatted GED test for its high school equivalency testing (HSE) program.

Texas additionally welcome the TASC and HiSET alternatives that can be taken both on-paper and on-computer.

The HSE program is for individuals who never completed high school and gives them the chance to acquire an equivalent degree.

All three HSE tests measure knowledge at a level comparable to what high school seniors are supposed to command upon graduation.

The GED exam includes four subtests on the subject areas of Science, Math, Social Studies, and Literacy that need to be completed within two years.

The HiSET and TASC have separate reading and writing tests, so five in total, that can also be taken separately.

Stage plank recipe. There is NO online GED, TASC, or HiSET testing option.

GED preparation & registration

There are many (mostly free) locations where dedicated teachers and volunteers work hard to get you properly prepared for the GED test. You can attend a prep class at one of the above-listed facilities or follow these video lessons. You can also find GED prep books at your community library or in the local bookstore. If you want to read all about eligibility requirements, go to HSE Testing in Texas.

To take the tests, you must go to GED.com and create your personal account at the online portal MyGED. Registration, scheduling your tests, and payments must all be done online, and you can also reschedule your tests quite easily, but you need to do so at least 24 hours in advance, or your money will be gone. The HSE diploma is across America accepted just like a standard high school degree by schools, employers, and government agencies.

One test at a time

No longer is there the need to take the entire GED test in a row. The GED test is modular, and this means that you have the option to take one section whenever you feel ready to do so as long as you finish all four tests within two years. So now you have the freedom to prepare for one of the four sub-tests, register for and schedule this test, and you only have to pay for that section. The HiSET and TASC subtests may be done separately as well if you wish.

Passing score

In early 2016, it was decided to adjust the GED passing requirements by five points downwards to 145 points for each subtest (down from 150). The TASC and HiSET exams come with their own scoring methods. Here is also a link to our post that lists all GED schools in America.

GED passing score

Upon rolling out the latest version of the GED test (the 2014 Series), the passing score was set at the 150-mark on each of the four tests. Studies showed, however, that many GED graduates were outperforming their high school counterparts, so in early 2016 it was decided to lower the passing score to 145 on each sub-test.

These scores are indicated on a 100-200 scale and are: Below passing score: 100-144; passing score: 145-164; college ready score: 165-174; and college ready plus credit score: 175-200. HiSET and TASC are scored in their own ways.

Is the HSE exam available online?

The GED test is actually fully “digitalized”, but despite revolutionary technical achievements will you still need to go to a certified HSE testing site to sit for the GED, TASC or HiSET test. The Texas HSE exam is just NOT offered via the internet. This also counts for the TASC and HiSET. Please beware of websites that tell you a different story. These sites are run by scam artists that just want to steal your money and the documents they will provide you with are worthless. Schools and employers will definitely NOT accept these documents.

What is in the HiSET exam?

Texas also introduced the HiSET exam in early 2014 for the state’s HSE (high school equivalency) testing program. The GED exam is only available in a computer-based format while the HiSET, like the TASC exam, is available both on a computer and in a paper-based version.

Five HiSET-TASC subject tests

There are five HiSET subject area tests in the academic fields of Mathematics, English Writing, English Reading, Social Studies, and Science. The HiSET, just like the other two available tests in America, the GED (General Education Development) and the TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) measures proficiency at a level comparable to what graduating HS seniors need to master.

To pass the HiSET subtests, you need to attain at least an 8-score on each individual subtest, your essay needs to score in the 2-6 range, and your overall score must be at least 45 (out of 100). The TASC passing score is 500 out of 800, so 2500 overall, and the essay result must be at least 2 as well here.

No online HiSET testing

There is no online HiSET, GED, or TASC testing option. To secure your HSE credential, you must show up at one of Texas’s state-approved HSE testing facilities and sit for the four GED modules or the five HiSET or TASC tests in person.

About the Tests
